Game Description

Aloha! Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of the islands while matching wits with your opponent in this unique spin on the classic "Five in a Row" motif.

You and an opponent compete for space on a 5x5 grid. When a row or column fills up, you can push your opponent's tokens off the grid. You can play either against a friend, or against the computer. Enjoy scenic background photos of sunny Oahu, and listen to island-inspired ukulele music.

This game was created to demonstrate the kinds of projects students can build in CS 203 at Brigham Young University Hawaii.

Backstory

As a boy, I came across an article by Dr. Robert Rossa, then a professor at Arkansas State University, which was published in the August 1984 issue of RUN Magazine. In this article, Dr. Rossa described a 2-player strategy game, entitled Slide, that he had created for the Commodore 64 computer, and discussed at length the particular Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) algorithm he implemented for it. The article was accompanied by a listing of the program's BASIC source code, which I typed in onto my C-64. That game quickly became one of my favorites, although its A.I. was so good that I could never win against it.

As a tribute to the late Dr. Rossa, I decided to give his game an updated GUI and make it available for today's users. The game-play is exactly the same as Dr. Rossa's original, but I've given it some "island-themed" visuals and sound effects (as I live in Hawaii).
