This throwaway pun was inspired by my experience at far too many church-sponsored dances during my teenage years. As a male in Western society, I knew it was my duty to ask the girls to dance, but my innate shyness prevented my asking more than one or two girls per night. Usually I'd come home from these dances frustrated and deflated, disgusted with myself for not breaking out of my shell to ask more girls to dance. (Why did I continue to go to these things, you may ask? Beats me... a sense of duty, I guess.)
Although I never did get very good at "fast dancing", I'm happy to report that I became a little less shy in college, and usually danced every slow song with a different girl. I can only assume that my two-year stint as a missionary in France helped to alleviate a little bit of my bashfulness.
